Coastal Alabama Clean Oceans Initiative

This initiative was created with a mission to reduce the amount of plastic products entering into our marine ecosystems that endanger many wildlife species. Currently, according to various studies, approximately 136,000 metric tons of plastic lines and nets are lost annually by commercial fishers; 3,000 miles of commercial fish netting are lost annually; and 5 million plastic containers are tossed overboard from ocean-going vessels every day.

This massive amount of pollution is very detrimental to the wildlife living in our seas. Annually, plastics pollution alone kill roughly 1 million seabirds, more than 100,000 whales, porpoises’, and seals every year; and countless numbers of endangered sea turtles and other marine life.

The SWCG is currently installing monofilament recycling containers across the Alabama Gulf Coast as well as increasing the education of the detrimental effects of plastics pollution on our marine environments and the wildlife within them. The SWCG is placing informational signs and distributing educational brochures informing the general populous. In addition, the SWCG will be continuously performing plastics and other pollutant removal services on both the land and on the water. This combined approach of education and retrieval of plastics pollution will greatly reduce the amounts of plastics and other pollutants entering our oceans.

How You Can Help

The Southeastern Wildlife Conservation Group needs your help both actively and financially to help us battle this problem. Our world’s oceans are being over harvested and over polluted at an alarming rate. We together, starting today, need to stand up and do what we can to help cure these issues.

First and foremost, all of us need to be conscious of our actions and not be part of the problem by eliminating our own contributions to plastics and other pollution. Other actions we can take are as follows:

Ø  Eliminate your own plastics pollution emissions;

Ø  Start recycling plastics and other consumables;

Ø  Remove plastics and other pollutants from our beaches, rivers and streams if you come across them;

Ø  Educate your friends, co-workers, children and general public of the detrimental effects of plastics pollution;

Ø  Use recycled plastics when available.

Together with your pro-active actions along with those of the SWCG, we together can help reduce the plastic plague that is invading our oceans. Not only do they kill uncounted millions of animal species annually, they also make the Southeastern United States beaches, parks and refuges unsightly and even potentially hazardous for our enjoyment.

In order to accomplish this mission, the Southeastern Wildlife Conservation Group needs all the financial help possible. If you would like to join the SWCG and make a small donation, please click the link below.
